European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry

Dear colleagues,

Let me start by thanking all the key-note speakers, workshop facilitators and contributors to our poster, panel, discussion and symposium sessions for turning the inaugural edition of the European Conference of Qualitative Inquiry into a success.  Thanks to all people who have contributed their thoughts on how to make the conference better, hereby directly influencing the direction, focus and atmosphere of edition 2018 of ECQI.

Yes indeed. The Network Qualitative Research KU Leuven and its partners wish to continue this journey. We are very much looking forward to your newly developed lines of inquiry or advancements made based on your previously presented work. We perceived the 1st edition of the European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry as a unique event for sharing knowledge and seeking new collaboration and partnerships. It was meant to provide opportunities for addressing the common challenges that qualitative researchers face in their own geographical regions or research disciplines. The second edition will most likely allow you to reconnect with friends and colleagues to learn about their latest work.

However, we would like it to become more than just a place for exchanging ideas and research. We also want it to be a place for change.  This year’s colloquium will allow participants to submit proposals for game changer session.  These will be running over a couple of days and will allow colleagues to develop strategies, policy documents or informed viewpoints on the major challenges ahead of us, from a disciplinary, interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary perspective.  We hope that many of these documents will find a place on the website of the European Network of Qualitative Inquiry we are currently developing and that many will join us into the network. We also launched a new submission category on creative research for scholars walking the thin line between art and science in the use of progressive ways of disseminating research findings.

This year’s conference team is Nomadic Inquiry or inquiry ‘in flux’. We particularly invite contributions that address the ontology and epistemology of flows, or the idea of ‘becoming’. What sort of processes of dynamic transformations do we see in society? Can we even make them explicit or do they escape our gaze? We offer a space for researchers that flirt with the boundaries of space and time and for work in which science meets imagination, creativity and affect. Most importantly, the theme opens itself up to contributions that address the important question of how our research work creates potentialities for multiple becoming. With the latter, we continue to build on our general line of interest in reflexivity.

Leuven did not change that much since last year. It feels safe for me to say that we are still that bustling city with many museums, monuments and historic buildings (incl. Unesco World Heritage) and a rich gastronomy, claiming to be ‘The place to beer!’. Be there!
